Weak dance: no structure, no story line, no virtuoso techniques, no music, no lighting effects, no costumes. Strong questions: what is a dance performance? What should it be? How is it received? With Weak Dance Strong Questions the British choreographer Jonathan Burrows and the Dutch theatre director Jan Ritsema, both on stage as dancers in everyday clothes, build a performance from the abandonment of dance, from the negation of the expectations it raises, starting from pure, renewed movement. Refined and down-to-earth, austere and unpredictable, absurd and perfectly lucid, provocative straight from the title, but without mannerisms, this performance overcomes conventional borders “reaching out towards the essence of theatre” (De Morgen). “It’s as if the silences in a Beckett or a Pinter play were allowed to dance.” (The Guardian).
